On behalf of the new countywide “Suicide: Talk about it. Save a life” initiative, you are cordially invited to join us for a special presentation by Kevin Hines, Golden Gate Bridge jump survivor, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. It’s free and open to the public.
As you may know, Shawnee County has experienced 17 youth suicides in the past four years. Family Service & Guidance Center, all of the Shawnee County public school districts, Hayden High School and the Shawnee County Suicide Prevention Coalition are working to reduce the number of youth deaths by suicide. We’re educating and empowering parents, students, school staff and other community members to talk openly about a subject that is typically uncomfortable and even off-limits.
How can you help?
1) You can attend this presentation to learn how to protect kids and teens in our community safe from the risk of suicide.
2) Oftentimes, we think suicide and other tragedies happen to “other people” – not to us. You can encourage ALL parents and individuals who work with children and teenagers to attend this important event. Please share the attached poster event information via social media, bulletins, newsletters, bulletin boards and by any other possible means. We would be greatly appreciative.
Too many young lives have been lost in our community already. Now is the time for action. It’s up to each and every one of us to make this a priority. We hope that you’ll join us!
